The last of the Boers surrendered in May 1902 and the war formally ended with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging on 31st May 1902. The British offered generous terms to regain the support of the Boers which included £3,000,000 for reconstruction and the promise of eventual self-government, which was granted in 1906 and 1907. The Treaty saw the end of the South African Republic and the Orange Free State as Boer republics and brought them fully into the Empire. The Union of South Africa was established as a dominion of the Empire in 1910.
This post card marks the period following the surrender and the integration of the Boers into the Empire. It shows the faces of three of the most prominent Boer leaders whom it ‘Welcomes under the dear old flag’. One can only guess at the innermost feelings of these three commanders, who had long defied British rule, when they saw their faces on this post card being welcomed ‘under’ the flag of their recent enemy!
